Medieval University City Krems

Krems is the eastern gateway to the Wachau Valley, one of Europe’s loveliest river landscapes with a long viticultural tradition. Surrounded by wine terrasses, the city of Krems represents one of the oldest cities in the Lower Austria. The historic townscape is characterized by narrow streets and Medieval squares surrounded by the facades of monasteries, churches, residential houses and the city’s fortress Gozzoburg, the location of the Culinary and Wine Tourism Conference 2024. The combination of the historic town center and the picturesque wine terraces, makes Krems one of the most attractive travel destinations in Austria. Over centuries, builders and architects created a unique city character that has been carefully maintained and preserved until today. In 1975, Krems was designated as the model city for historical preservation and in 2000 Krems was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the same time Krems is a lively city characterized by its universities, students and by representing one of Lower Austria’s economic centres. Students from all over the world study and work here. They play an essential role for the vitality and flair of the historic town. Krems combines tradition and modern lifestyle and is well known for its cultural richness and hospitality.

CWTC24 Keynote: The demand for retail tourism – analysis of a global survey

This study examines the post-COVID-19 behavior of an important tourist segment – retail tourists – based on global survey data. The factors influencing the demand for retail tourism were identified and contrasted between tourists from different source markets. One of the interesting segments identified was the “Gourmet Seekers” along with the “Inspirational Shoppers” and the “Fashionards”. The research findings of the study shed important light on destination marketing and management.

City of Krems and its viticultural surroundings

Krems an der Donau is the eastern gateway to the Wachau Valley, one of Europe’s loveliest river-formed landscapes. It is also one of the oldest cities in the surrounding area. The city’s history extends back for more than a thousand years being evidently visible everywhere – in the streets, squares, facades of monasteries, churches and residential houses. The Medieval city’s fortress Gozzoburg, being one of the oldest buildings and the location of the conference, dates to the 13th century. The historical center of Krems is one of the most attractive sites in Europe. Over the centuries, architects created a unique cityscape that has been carefully preserved until today. These efforts were not unnoticed. In 1975 Krems was awarded as a “Model City for Historical Preservation” and in 2000 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. With all this history, you might think that the city is dominated by the past. In reality, Krems is open to modern life: Contemporary art and culture play an important role, adding variety and energy to public areas throughout the city.

Lower Austria is the largest wine-growing region in Austria. This federal province is associated with a wealth of different origins and wine styles produced from unique domestic grapes, as well as international varieties. Surrounded by the Danube and picturesque wine terraces, Krems is located within the center of several Austrian wine-growing regions, all of which can be explored easily during a stay in Krems. The famous Wachau is a valley with terraced vineyards on steep slopes along the Danube. It’s mild climate and primary rock soils give rise to mineralic and aromatic white wines, best enjoyed in one of the local Heurigen winemaker restaurants. The Krems Valley, with Krems in its center, is shaped by wine terraces along the River Danube and the smaller Krems river valley. From the historical monastery Stift Göttweig on a hill, visitors have the possibility to have a splendid view over the area. The Kamptal in the North is known for high quality white and excellent sparkling wines. In particular Grüner Veltiner and Riesling vines root into loess dominated soils balancing the wine’s body and fine acidity experience. On the Danube’s Southern side close to Krems, visitors have the opportunity to discover and taste the wines of Traisental. Dominated by river sediments and a comparably cooler climate, wine lovers can taste the minerality character of its outstanding DAC wines.
